Fiji’s Porn Data Surge: Government Takes Action!

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica revealed that Fiji consumes 92 terabytes of data monthly for accessing pornographic and adult content. In his Ministerial Statement, Kamikamica indicated that such material has established a considerable footprint, significantly impacting network traffic. He noted that over a three-month period, approximately 626 terabytes of data were downloaded, placing it among the top ten data traffic users. To put this into perspective, he mentioned that 626 terabytes is roughly equivalent to 100 million books.

Kamikamica emphasized the substantial presence of adult content in network usage, stating, “The numbers do not lie… we can be assured that the industry is huge.” He announced that the Cabinet has sanctioned the formation of a National Taskforce aimed at addressing the issues surrounding pornography, enhancing understanding of its societal risks, and providing effective recommendations.

He assured that the task force represents a meaningful initiative, illustrating the Coalition Government’s dedication to proactive measures. Additionally, Kamikamica mentioned efforts to finalize a Cabinet paper for the Fiji Government, through the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children, to join the WeProtect Global Alliance, aimed at tackling child sexual abuse online.
