Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, recently engaged in discussions with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, taking place in Bangkok.

In their meeting, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its vital support in creating Fiji’s first National Population Policy. This policy is designed to address demographic shifts and ensure that population trends are in sync with the country’s national development objectives. The implementation of this policy is anticipated to significantly influence Fiji’s future growth trajectory.

Additionally, UNFPA has expressed enthusiasm for Fiji’s upcoming participation in the 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), scheduled for April 2025, highlighting the collaborative effort between Fiji and UNFPA in addressing population challenges.

This collaboration emphasizes the commitment of both parties to promote sustainable development and tackle the pressing demographic challenges that Fiji faces. By aligning population policies with developmental goals, there is hope for a brighter and more structured future for the nation.

In summary, the engagement between the Fijian government and UNFPA illustrates a proactive approach to managing demographic changes, setting a positive pathway towards sustainable growth and development in Fiji.
