Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, recently engaged in discussions with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, which took place in Bangkok.

DPM Prasad expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its assistance in creating Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This policy is designed to tackle demographic changes and ensure that these shifts align with the nation’s development objectives. The policy is anticipated to significantly influence Fiji’s future development and growth trajectory.

Furthermore, UNFPA is eager for Fiji to participate in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) scheduled for April 2025, highlighting the ongoing commitment to collaborative efforts in addressing regional population challenges.

This meeting underscores the importance of international partnerships in tackling demographic issues and the role such collaborations can play in shaping national policies that foster sustainable development.

In summary, the discussions between Fiji and UNFPA not only help in addressing current demographic challenges but also pave the way for future growth and collaboration in regional development initiatives. It is a positive step forward in ensuring that population dynamics are considered in national planning, which ultimately benefits the citizens of Fiji.
