Tensions are escalating within Fiji’s ruling coalition as Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has threatened to cut ties with the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), prompted by critical comments made by SODELPA’s general secretary, Viliame Takayawa, regarding a recent government trade mission to Tonga.

Mr. Takayawa accused the delegation of failing to engage adequately with the Fijian diaspora, alleging they prioritized leisure activities over official duties. He claimed these comments were based on hearsay from family members in Tonga and were expressed on his personal social media page. However, Prime Minister Rabuka interpreted these remarks as indicative of deeper issues within SODELPA’s leadership, signaling that the coalition agreement is under review due to ongoing frustrations.

Former SODELPA MP Tanya Waqanika defended the trade mission, stating that the delegation operated with integrity and followed an organized schedule that included signing two trade deals critical for Fiji’s largest export market. Waqanika dismissed Takayawa’s assertions, emphasizing that his comments have caused unnecessary harm to the team’s credibility.

The fallout from this incident has pushed Rabuka to reassess the partnership with SODELPA, not just due to this incident but also arising concerns about Minister Aseri Radrodro’s performance in the Education Ministry. Rabuka has hinted that without improvements, the party’s future in the coalition may not be guaranteed.

Comparing to previous events, there is a growing need for constructive dialogue and collaboration within the coalition to address unrest and promote stability. Amidst the tensions, the backing of nine independent candidates for Prime Minister Rabuka points towards potential shifts in political dynamics, presenting an opportunity for reforms that could lead to enhanced governance.

As coalition members navigate these challenges, the hope lies in their ability to engage in open communication, address grievances effectively, and ultimately work together for the greater good of Fiji and its citizens.
