The Fiji Labour Party has expressed strong opposition to Barbara Malimali assuming the role of head of FICAC while she is under investigation. In a recent statement, party leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that Malimali should resign from her position as Commissioner of FICAC until the allegations of abuse of office against her are thoroughly investigated by competent and impartial authorities.
Chaudhry highlighted that Malimali is currently under arrest and undergoing questioning regarding the allegations. He also raised concerns about the close relationship between Malimali and Attorney General Graham Leung. He pointed out that in April 2024, Malimali, while serving as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, had recommended Leung as the Supervisor of Elections to take over from Ana Mataiciwa, who was then acting in the role.
Chaudhry further argued that Malimali’s situation is increasingly problematic, noting that in July, she appeared in court as legal counsel for Jason Zong, who has been charged by FICAC with bribery.
