Fiji’s Political Turmoil: Are Voters Ready for Change?

Savenaca Narube, leader of the Unity Fiji Party and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, has urged the government to address its internal issues. He expressed that the emergence of factions within the government or Cabinet seeking to establish a new political party will not resolve the leadership and economic challenges currently facing the nation.

Mr. Narube’s comments follow Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s admission of factions within his party, including members considering a split to form a new party by 2026.

He emphasized that the focus should not be on the formation of new political parties but rather on the credibility of the leadership within them. Narube criticized the political class, accusing them of merely swapping parties for self-serving agendas.

He noted the repeated patterns of political leaders lacking integrity and principles, warning that history tends to repeat itself. “What goes around comes around,” he stated, highlighting the erosion of public trust in politicians who have been in power over the last twenty years.

Narube called on voters to not be misled by seasoned politicians presenting themselves in new ways. He encouraged the electorate to take responsibility for their choices and to vote wisely in the upcoming 2026 elections.

He stressed the importance of selecting a leader who will genuinely work towards transforming the economy, reducing poverty, managing the cost of living, fostering unity among communities, enhancing safety, and combatting corruption, particularly at higher levels of government.
