Savenaca Narube, the leader of the Unity Fiji Party and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, is urging the government to address its internal issues. He expressed concerns that reports of factions within the government or Cabinet attempting to form a new political party will not resolve the leadership or economic challenges facing the nation.
Narube’s remarks follow Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s acknowledgment that he has been informed about divisions within his party that may result in some members breaking away to establish a new party by 2026.
Narube emphasized the importance of credible leadership over the mere existence of political parties, stating that it is the integrity of the leaders that truly matters. He criticized politicians who prioritize their power and personal interests instead of serving the public good.
He highlighted a pattern of party-switching among leaders, particularly referencing the track record of the leader of the People’s Alliance (PA) party, suggesting that without strong principles, history is likely to repeat itself.
Noting that trust is vital in national leadership, Narube lamented the decline of public confidence in politicians over the past twenty years. He encouraged voters to be wary of politicians who continue to betray public trust and to take responsibility by making informed choices at the ballot box.
Looking ahead to the 2026 elections, he urged citizens to vote for leaders capable of driving economic transformation, reducing poverty, addressing the cost of living, promoting unity among all ethnic groups, ensuring safety, and eradicating corruption, particularly at higher levels of government.
