Fiji’s Political Truth: Will the Past Finally Be Revealed?

Fiji is currently facing a “culture of convenience,” as noted by the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu. He expressed concerns about how the allure of convenience influences individuals and groups to take shortcuts for personal and political gain. His comments came in response to findings from the Government’s National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), which pointed out a lack of trust in the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Seruiratu emphasized that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) presents an opportunity for the RFMF to disclose the events surrounding past coups. He believes it is vital for those involved in previous political upheavals, including individuals released from the 2000 incidents and military personnel from the Queen Elizabeth and Sukanaivalu Barracks, to share their stories. He noted that the experiences of those from the coups in 1987 should also be included, stating, “only the truth will set us free.”

As a former RFMF officer, Seruiratu remarked that without revealing the truth, past issues would remain unresolved, akin to ignoring a spider while merely brushing away its webs.

Regarding the review of the 2013 Constitution, Seruiratu asserted that discussions should only occur after the TRC process is genuinely and honestly completed. He clarified that Fiji’s difficulties do not stem from the Constitution itself but from individuals or groups feeling cheated by the democratic process, leading them to stage coups for their political and personal motivations. He pointed out historical instances where coups led to constitutional changes, noting that the new Constitutions incorporated immunity clauses to shield coup instigators from legal repercussions.

In closing, Seruiratu stressed the need for leadership and a sincere commitment from various sectors of society, including political figures, community leaders, chiefs, religious leaders, and the business community, ensuring that the interests of the people remain at the forefront of these discussions.
