Fiji’s Political Shadows: Unraveling the Truth Behind the Coups

Fiji is currently facing issues related to a “culture of convenience,” according to Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition. He expressed concerns that individuals and groups may take shortcuts for personal or political gain, which he believes reflects a troubling trend.

His comments were made in response to findings from the Government’s National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), which revealed a lack of trust in the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Mr. Seruiratu noted that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) presents a significant opportunity for the RFMF to disclose the circumstances surrounding past coups. He emphasized the need for those involved, including recently released individuals connected to the events of 2000 and military members affected by incarceration, to share their perspectives. Additionally, testimonies related to the coups of 1987 should also be considered, as Mr. Seruiratu believes that truth is essential for moving forward.

A former RFMF officer, he stated, “Without the truth being told, it would be a case of brushing cobwebs when the spider continues to loom far and wide.”

On the topic of constitutional reform, Mr. Seruiratu argued that discussions regarding the review of the 2013 Constitution should only begin once the TRC process has been thoroughly and sincerely completed. He pointed out that Fiji’s issues stem from individual egos rather than flaws within the Constitution itself. He explained that previous coups, such as those in 1987, 2000, and 2006, prompted changes to the Constitution, often incorporating provisions to protect those who instigated these upheavals from legal repercussions.

He stressed that effective leadership and genuine commitment from various sectors of society—political and community leaders, chiefs, religious figures, the business community, and the general populace—are crucial in addressing these challenges.
