Constitutional Conversations: Can Fiji's Leaders Find Common Ground?

Fiji’s Political Leaders Seek Dialogue Amid Constitutional Controversy

In a renewed push for dialogue, Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has called for a meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka regarding proposed amendments to the Constitution. This appeal comes despite prior resistance from Seruiratu to engage fully in discussions centered around constitutional reforms.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica highlighted that while initial conversations have taken place, Seruiratu is looking for further involvement, particularly with the notable absence of Members of Parliament from key opposition parties, such as the National Federation Party (NFP) and SODELPA, in discussions about the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. Kamikamica clarified that an earlier text sent to Seruiratu aimed to facilitate ongoing discussions and had the Prime Minister’s backing.

Kamikamica also pointed out that Seruiratu’s actions have been influenced by past leaders, which he believes has negatively impacted the effective exercise of parliamentary duties. He emphasized the importance of a robust understanding of constitutional and legislative frameworks that could empower the opposition in their decision-making processes.

Seruiratu has criticized the government for its perceived lack of transparency and has voiced concerns over the push for constitutional alterations without adequate public consultation or the involvement of all parliamentary groups. He has cautioned against rapid decisions that could jeopardize the rights of the Fijian people.

This call for renewed dialogue coincides with increasing public interest in the constitutional amendment process. There exists a hopeful perspective that as both government and opposition leaders continue to participate in discussions, they can work towards meaningful reforms that truly reflect the diverse aspirations and needs of Fiji’s population.

As Fiji participates in these crucial political dialogues, there is optimism that such collaborative efforts can lead to enhanced governance and unity, ultimately fostering a sense of inclusiveness that resonates well with its citizens.
