The Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, Inia Seruiratu, has expressed his lack of concern regarding the suspension of Attorney-General Graham Leung, asserting that the continuity of government operations remains a priority. This development follows Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s decision to suspend Leung after the findings of a Commission of Inquiry (COI) report deemed his position untenable.

Seruiratu emphasized that no one is irreplaceable, stating, “There are people who can carry out the work and the work will go on,” and he welcomed the government’s actions as a step towards accountability. However, he urged for transparency, calling for the full report from the COI to be made publicly accessible to ensure clarity regarding the decision-making processes that affect leadership positions.

When questioned about whether he had discussed the COI report with Prime Minister Rabuka, Seruiratu indicated that he had not, citing adherence to the commission’s instructions. On the matter of suspending Barbara Malimali, the former commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), he referred to the proper authorities needing to handle such matters, reinforcing that any actions should remain within the jurisdiction appropriate to the roles involved.

The suspension of Leung and the ongoing scrutiny surrounding FICAC highlight heightened tensions in Fiji’s political environment, which calls for increased transparency and accountability. Seruiratu’s endorsement of these principles resonates with the ongoing public demand for ethical governance and integrity in public office appointments.

This situation could be seen as a turning point for Fiji’s governance, as it allows for the possibility of reforms that align more closely with the aspirations of its citizens for a trustworthy and transparent political landscape. The engagements and statements from political leaders during this period reflect a commitment to improving governance standards, fostering a hopeful outlook for potential positive change in the Fijian political framework.
