The Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) convened yesterday to consider Independent parliamentarian Alvick Maharaj’s appeal against the deregistration of the Fiji First Party by the Registrar of Political Parties. The party was officially deregistered on July 1, 2024.

Barbara Malimali, chairperson of the ECF, emphasized the importance of public patience as the commission works towards a resolution for the appeal. “We are pleased that the process is now underway,” she stated.

She added, “We look forward to publishing our decision at the conclusion. Until then, we will not be in a position to comment. We trust the public of Fiji will understand this need for discretion and be patient.”

The ECF is addressing the appeal in its quasi-judicial capacity.
