The Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) convened yesterday to consider the appeal from Independent MP Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of the Fiji First Party by the Registrar of Political Parties. The party was officially deregistered on July 1, 2024. ECF chairperson Barbara Malimali emphasized the need for patience from the people of Fiji as the commission works through the appeal process.
“We are pleased that the process is now underway,” she stated. “We look forward to publishing our decision at the conclusion. Until then, we are unable to make any comments. We trust the public of Fiji will understand this need for discretion and will be patient.”
The ECF is addressing the appeal in its quasi-judicial role.
