The Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) convened yesterday to review the appeal filed by Independent parliamentarian Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of the Fiji First Party by the Registrar of Political Parties. The deregistration occurred on July 1, 2024. ECF chairperson Barbara Malimali emphasized the need for patience from the Fijian public as the commission works towards a decision on the appeal.

“We are pleased that the process is now underway,” she stated. Malimali expressed anticipation for publishing their decision upon completion of the appeal process. “Until then, we will not be in a position to comment. We trust the public of Fiji will understand this need for discretion and be patient.”

The ECF is addressing the appeal in its quasi-judicial role.
