The Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) convened yesterday to consider the appeal filed by Independent parliamentarian Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of the Fiji First Party by the Registrar of Political Parties.

The Fiji First Party was officially deregistered on July 1, 2024. ECF chairperson Barbara Malimali emphasized the need for patience from the people of Fiji as the commission works towards a resolution.

“We are pleased that the process is now underway,” she stated. “We look forward to publishing our decision upon its conclusion. Until then, we cannot provide further comments. We trust that the public of Fiji will understand the necessity for discretion and will be patient.”

The ECF is undertaking this appeal in its quasi-judicial capacity.
