The Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration in Fiji, Pio Tikoduadua, has called on police officers to uphold high standards of professionalism following a troubling incident in which an officer was allegedly seen engaging in drug-related activities at Labasa Market, as captured by CCTV footage.
Minister Tikoduadua emphasized the vital role integrity plays in the police force, stating that Fiji requires police officers dedicated to enforcing the law and reporting any misconduct. He reminded the officers that they are not above the law, stressing that every individual is subject to legal accountability.
“Police officers are not the law. No one is above the law because the law is the law,” he asserted. The Minister pointed out that such incidents jeopardize the trust that the community places in law enforcement. “These actions do not aid in re-building public trust in the police force. Trust is earned and critical for the integrity of our institutions,” he stated.
Furthermore, he noted that the public does not expect police officers to partake in illegal activities, particularly regarding drugs. He requested that during the ongoing investigation, the legal process must be respected to ensure justice is served.
While this situation is unfortunate, Minister Tikoduadua’s remarks reflect a commitment to reinforcing accountability within the police force, highlighting an opportunity for reform and the restoration of public trust. If handled properly, this incident could lead to positive changes in policing standards and community relations, demonstrating the importance of integrity and transparency in law enforcement.
