The Fiji Human Rights and Anti Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has recently reported three instances of alleged police brutality. The Chairman of the Commission, Pravesh Sharma, shared that the first case involves a man from Nausori who claims to have experienced physical assault. The second report details an individual who was reportedly held in police custody in the Northern division for two weeks and also alleges physical assault. The third case involves concerns about the alleged use of force during a caution interview to obtain a confession.
Mr. Sharma emphasized the necessity for an urgent, fair, and transparent investigation into these allegations, stating, “Perpetrators must be held accountable.” He underscored that accountability is essential for rebuilding public trust in the justice system and preventing the recurrence of such incidents.
This situation highlights the critical need for accountability and reform within law enforcement to ensure the protection of human rights and public trust. The FHRADC’s commitment to investigating these allegations is a step toward fostering a safer and more just community.
