In a decisive action to restore public confidence, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has mandated the removal of all officers from the Fiji Narcotics Bureau following the recent arrest of two officers in connection to an alleged drug smuggling incident. This significant measure aims to address rising concerns about police integrity within the bureau, with a complete review of its operations now underway.

After a critical meeting with the Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua, Tudravu outlined the urgent need to reassess the bureau’s structure, announcing that all current officers would revert to their original positions within the force. Those wishing to continue in the bureau will be required to reapply for their positions, ensuring a thorough vetting process amid growing public skepticism.

The issue came to light after a joint operation led to the discovery of over four kilograms of methamphetamine at Nadi International Airport, where two police officers were among the seven individuals arrested. This operation highlighted concerning irregularities in an airfreight shipment linked to a Southeast African nation, drawing the attention of both the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS).

Since its establishment in July of the previous year as an independent entity under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Counter Narcotics Bureau has faced scrutiny due to its members’ alleged involvement in criminal activities they are sworn to combat. The recent arrests have raised critical questions about the bureau’s credibility and operational integrity.

Tudravu has expressed serious concerns about the situation, pledging a thorough investigation to ascertain any broader criminal networks indicating systemic issues within Fiji’s law enforcement. The ongoing reforms and accountability measures aim to not only uncover but also effectively address the challenges facing police integrity.

These developments signal a critical turn in Fiji’s fight against drug-related crimes, demonstrating a commitment to improved transparency and ethical conduct within the police force. By taking swift action, there is renewed hope that these measures will lead to a more accountable and trustworthy law enforcement system in Fiji, ultimately fostering a safer environment for its citizens.
