Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has reiterated the Fiji Police Force’s dedication to its no-drop policy concerning domestic violence. His comments come in response to allegations from Shamima Ali, the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) coordinator, who accused officers of inadequately handling domestic violence reports and encouraging countercharges against victims.

Tudravu emphasized that the police force firmly supports a no-drop policy, which mandates that all domestic violence complaints be thoroughly investigated, regardless of the victim’s willingness to pursue charges. He acknowledged that the challenge lies not in the policy itself but in its implementation. “All officers know that,” he stated, referencing the training that police personnel receive on handling domestic violence cases.

The Commissioner recognized that restoring public trust and confidence would take time and urged the community to be patient as reforms unfold. He assured the public that the police are committed to holding officers accountable for any misconduct and that they have nothing to hide.

Tudravu’s remarks align with recent discussions about the need for enhanced training for police officers in responding to domestic violence incidents. Previous critiques have highlighted that some officers may lack the necessary training to handle these sensitive issues effectively, raising concerns that many victims feel discouraged from reporting such events.

The ongoing dialogue between the FWCC and police leadership underscores both parties’ commitment to improving law enforcement’s response to domestic violence. There is a growing sense of optimism that these efforts might help create a cultural shift within the police force, leading to more compassionate engagement with victims and enhanced community trust.

As these conversations continue, the collaboration between organizations focused on combatting domestic violence signals a hopeful path toward improved safety and support for vulnerable individuals in Fiji. The ultimate goal remains to implement strategies that protect women and children, fostering a safer environment for all.
