The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has issued a strong denunciation of the acts of violence perpetrated by members of the Fiji Police Force. These violent actions are a serious infringement on human rights and erode the trust that the community places in law enforcement.

In their statement, the FHRDC emphasized that police officers, as guardians of public safety, have a responsibility to uphold the law with integrity and professionalism, and to engage with the public in a manner that is respectful and dignified. The recent allegations of excessive force used by police officers are alarming and cannot be justified.

The Commission has received three serious complaints regarding alleged human rights violations by police. One incident reported involved police brutality in Nausori, where a bystander was physically assaulted. Another concerning case involved a man who was reportedly detained in police custody in the Northern division for two weeks and was assaulted during that time. Additionally, there are claims of force being used during a caution interview to extract a confession.

In light of these incidents, the FHRADC is calling for immediate, impartial, and transparent investigations into the allegations of police brutality. Ensuring accountability for such actions is essential for restoring public trust in the justice system and preventing future occurrences.

Moreover, the Commission advocates for the Fiji Police Force to prioritize thorough human rights training for all officers, focusing on the principles of restraint, de-escalation, and respect for human dignity in all interactions.

In the pursuit of justice and human rights, it is hopeful that with thorough investigations and proper training, the Fiji Police Force can rebuild its relationship with the community and support the protection of human rights within the nation. This commitment to accountability and respect is essential for fostering a safer and more just society.
