The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has expressed serious concerns regarding the reporting structure within the Fiji Police Force. He stated that officers have been prioritizing communication with politicians, business leaders, and chiefs instead of following the proper chain of command. This situation has been described as unacceptable, as the police are meant to uphold and enforce the law impartially.
During a meeting with the Rotary Club in Labasa, Tikoduadua emphasized the necessity for police to be accountable to the law and to ensure the safety of all members of the community, rather than catering to select groups. He acknowledged a significant decline in public trust, noting that many citizens no longer feel secure due to these issues.
The Minister indicated that he receives numerous complaints about police conduct daily, highlighting a significant gap between the police and the community. In response to these concerns, the Fiji Police Force is implementing a ‘Police Reset Strategy’ aimed at professionalizing their operations and improving accountability. Collaborations with Australian and New Zealand authorities are part of this initiative, intended to enhance the capabilities and integrity of the police in Fiji.
This proactive approach signals a commitment to reform within law enforcement and recognizes the critical need for restoring trust between the police and the public. With these measures, there is hope that the police force can become a more reliable and respected institution, ultimately leading to a safer environment for all citizens.
