The Fiji Police Force is gearing up for promising developments as the 2025-2026 National Budget approaches. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad assured that the budget would include significant provisions aimed at enhancing resources to combat the escalating drug crisis in the nation.
During a recent statement, Prasad responded to inquiries regarding budget increases for policing, particularly in light of the urgent need for improved services and restructuring within the Force, as emphasized earlier by Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua. Naivalurua has highlighted the underfunded aspects crucial for effectively addressing modern policing challenges, especially related to surging drug-related crimes.
“We may need to adjust our expenditure slightly, possibly raising the deficit or the debt-to-Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio. Nevertheless, we are in a stronger position compared to what we inherited,” Prasad stated. He reassured that this upcoming budget is tailored to the people, focusing on uplifting the living standards of Fijians.
Similar to prior discussions surrounding budget allocations, indications of community engagement and program effectiveness are being prioritized. The government is intent on ensuring that investments made will correlate with positive enhancements to public safety and law enforcement capabilities, thus addressing the significant reports of crime rising by 26% early this year.
The Fiji Police Force, which has seen escalating calls for improvement and reform amidst rising crime rates, is also expected to play a crucial role alongside the proposed establishment of a dedicated Narcotics Bureau, underscoring the government’s commitment to an active fight against drug-related offenses.
This proactive focus reflects a hopeful trajectory for Fiji, aiming to bolster community trust in law enforcement while addressing systemic issues and alleviating public safety concerns. Enhanced collaboration between police leadership and the government can pave the way for marked improvements in the performance and capability of the Fiji Police Force.
The overall approach reflects a concerted effort towards not just combating crime but also fostering a safer and stronger Fiji for all its citizens.
