Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu recently announced plans to discuss a review of the Counter Narcotics Bureau with Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua in an upcoming meeting. This discussion comes in light of increased scrutiny directed at the bureau following an alleged drug smuggling incident involving one of its members at Nadi International Airport last Friday. During his monthly press conference, Commissioner Tudravu expressed his concern, stating he has taken measures to ensure accountability by directing the constable involved to be suspended without pay.

Tudravu acknowledged that while the bureau has a crucial mandate to combat the narcotics problem, an evaluation of its operations is necessary for improvement. He indicated that restoring public trust in the police force is not an overnight process and emphasized the need for significant effort to change the negative perceptions that have developed over time. “Trust the process and believe that we will hold our officers accountable,” he urged the public.

In parallel with these discussions, the Fiji Police Force is preparing submissions for the 2025-2026 National Budget, including requests for funding aimed at reforming and restructuring the agency, which may involve increasing personnel and support systems. Tudravu highlighted the evolving demands on policing that necessitate specialized operational and investigative task forces.

The police chief also shared a positive update regarding crime in April, noting a 20% reduction in overall criminal activity compared to the same period last year, suggesting law enforcement measures are beginning to trend in a favorable direction.

In related developments, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua previously pointed out that while there are a few problematic officers within the police force, the majority are dedicated and professional. He reaffirmed that the establishment of the Counter Narcotics Bureau represents a strategic decision made by the government to address drug-related crimes more effectively, with a focus on enhancing capabilities rather than undermining the role of existing police authority.

These ongoing efforts signal a comprehensive response from the government and police force to the challenges of drug-related crime in Fiji, instilling hope for a more effective and accountable law enforcement system in the future.
