Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, received a traditional welcome from the Fijian community in Port Moresby on Sunday, marking the start of his visit to Papua New Guinea for vital regional policing meetings. This warm reception, organized with the assistance of Fiji’s High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Jackson Evans, exemplified the strong sense of community among Fijians living abroad.
Commissioner Tudravu expressed his gratitude for the heartfelt welcome and commended the Fijian diaspora for maintaining their cultural customs and identity despite being away from home. He remarked on the significance of unity among Fijians worldwide, emphasizing the important bond that culture creates even across borders.
During his visit, the Commissioner is attending key events such as the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI) Design Steering Group meeting, the Pacific Chiefs of Police Forum, and the inaugural Pacific Police Tattoo — a cultural showcase featuring police bands from various nations including PNG, Australia, New Zealand, and more. These meetings facilitate critical discussions around policing strategies and strengthen regional partnerships in law enforcement.
In conjunction with the celebrations, Commissioner Tudravu also acknowledged the Fijian Police Band’s participation in the AFP-supported Police Tattoo. This event serves to cultivate regional unity through music and culture while enhancing collaboration among police forces across the Pacific.
An interactive “talanoa” session allowed the Commissioner to engage with community members on various policing matters, reaffirming the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to serve both locally and internationally. “Policing goes beyond borders when we represent our country,” he stated, underlining a dedication to service characterized by respect and honor.
This visit not only highlights Fiji’s ongoing commitment to regional law enforcement collaboration but also signals a positive outlook for future partnerships and community engagement efforts within the Pacific. As Commissioner Tudravu forges connections during his travels, the hope is that such initiatives will lead to improved safety and security across the region, fostering a collaborative spirit among Pacific nations.
Overall, the atmosphere of goodwill and cooperation indicates a promising continuation of efforts to enhance policing capabilities and community relations in the Pacific, establishing a foundation for a safer future.
