Fiji’s PM Supports FICAC Chief Amid Inquiry Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed support for Barbara Malimali to continue her role as head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This statement comes as the government seeks to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations made by Francis Puleiwai, the former Deputy Commissioner.

In a media briefing, Rabuka stated that Malimali is encouraged to fulfill her responsibilities unless she believes her involvement may hinder the investigation, in which case she should consider stepping aside. “She is a senior lawyer and should be aware of what is in the best interest of everyone,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister emphasized that an independent commission would be more effective in addressing the concerns raised by Puleiwai, particularly claims of ministerial interference in FICAC investigations. He noted that if the inquiry finds evidence of such interference, the Commission of Inquiry’s recommended due process would need to be followed.

Regarding allegations that Puleiwai faced threats, Rabuka condemned any such actions if they occurred. He clarified that he has not been informed of any threats and that none have been reported to him or the Fiji Police.
