Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has affirmed the commitment of the Fijian government to address the challenges faced by the Melanesian Community. Speaking during the Melanesian Celebrations in Suva, the Prime Minister emphasized that the government is attentive to their issues and is actively seeking solutions to improve their circumstances.
Rabuka highlighted the significant contributions of Melanesian ancestors to Fiji’s development, underscoring the government’s dedication to honor their legacy. He stated, “Like others who would have endured great challenges, they have turned those encounters into strength, with their experiences shaping a legacy that continues to influence perspectives, values, and aspirations across generations.”
He pointed out the importance of ensuring that the unique needs and challenges of the Melanesian Community are integrated into the national framework. The Prime Minister also noted a pivotal government initiative, established through a cabinet decision since 1998, to allocate annual development grants to Melanesian communities, a practice that remains in force today.
This commitment from the government reflects a positive step towards inclusion and recognition of the Melanesian Community’s vital role in Fiji’s society. It is a hopeful sign that ongoing efforts will lead to tangible improvements in their livelihoods and a more unified national fabric.
