Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed the Fijian Government’s commitment to addressing the concerns and challenges faced by the Melanesian community in Fiji. During his remarks at the Melanesian Celebrations held in Suva, he emphasized that the struggles of this community have not gone unnoticed and assured them that solutions are being sought to improve their circumstances.
Rabuka noted the significant contributions of Melanesian ancestors to the nation’s growth and development, affirming that their legacy is highly valued by the Government. He acknowledged that, like many others who have faced hardships, the Melanesian community has demonstrated resilience, transforming challenges into a legacy that shapes the values, perspectives, and ambitions of future generations.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of inclusion, stating that the Government is dedicated to meeting the specific needs of the Melanesian community within the national framework. He also pointed out that a substantial milestone was achieved through a cabinet decision made in 1998 to allocate an annual development grant to Melanesian communities, a commitment that has been upheld over the years.
This proactive approach reflects a hopeful vision for the future, where community support and government accountability work hand in hand to empower all citizens. The continued acknowledgment and investment in the Melanesian community pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society in Fiji.
