Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed unwavering support for Fiji’s Melanesian Community, affirming that their challenges are recognized and will be addressed by the Government. Speaking at the Melanesian Celebrations in Suva, he emphasized that his administration is committed to serving all citizens, not just a select few.

Rabuka highlighted the significant contributions of Melanesian ancestors to Fiji’s development, acknowledging their enduring legacy that shapes perspectives, values, and aspirations through generations. He stressed the importance of inclusivity and the need to address the unique needs and challenges faced by Melanesian communities within the national framework.

Importantly, the Prime Minister noted that the Government has made substantial strides in supporting these communities, including a cabinet decision to provide an annual development grant for the Melanesian communities since 1998, a commitment that continues to this day.

This commitment from the Government is a positive sign of inclusivity in governance and an acknowledgment of the rich heritage and contributions of the Melanesian people. As Fiji moves forward, initiatives like these can foster greater unity and empowerment among diverse communities.

For a hopeful perspective, the Government’s continued support and recognition of the Melanesian Community presents an opportunity for strengthening cultural ties, enhancing community development, and ultimately improving the quality of life for all citizens in Fiji.
