Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has responded to international media reports regarding a suspected case of alcohol poisoning at the Warrick Fiji Resort, deeming them as “highly exaggerated.” In a media briefing, he emphasized the importance of countering misinformation to maintain Fiji’s reputation as an appealing travel destination.

The incident, which occurred last weekend, involved seven guests from the resort who displayed symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological distress. They were initially taken to Sigatoka Hospital and later transferred to Aspen Lautoka Hospital after consuming Pina Colada cocktails at the resort’s Suva Wing Bar. Notably, guests at other bars within the resort who ordered the same drink did not experience any adverse effects.

In light of these events, the Prime Minister and the government are urging for clarity to correct any misconceptions. Rabuka affirmed that the situation is currently under control and is not indicative of a broader threat to Fiji’s vibrant tourism sector. He invited potential visitors to feel confident in traveling to Fiji and raised concerns about negative narratives that might stem from competitors within the tourism industry.

Further reinforcing the government’s stance, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka shared that toxicology reports have found no traces of illicit substances or methanol in the liquor involved in the incident, bolstering the reassurance of safety for tourists.

In summary, the government’s proactive communication and swift actions in this matter illustrate its commitment to maintaining trust in Fiji’s tourism sector, assuring that it remains a safe and attractive destination for travelers from around the globe. This incident serves as an opportunity for the Fiji government to strengthen its tourist safety measures, ensuring a positive travel experience for all visitors.
