Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the commitment of the Fijian government to ensuring the safety and sanctity of all public buildings, including places of worship. His comments came in response to a letter expressing concerns about the protection of Hindu temples, particularly amid recent attacks targeting such sites in Fiji.
Rabuka condemned the recent attacks, stating, “Churches, temples, shrines and mosques are particularly sacrosanct and are held in very high regard by all right-thinking and law-abiding citizens.” He specifically addressed the assaults on Hindu places of worship in Suva, assuring the public that the Fiji Police Force acted promptly, resulting in the arrest of the alleged offenders.
Highlighting Fiji’s multi-religious and multi-ethnic society, Rabuka encouraged all citizens to respect and treat places of worship as sacred. This sentiment aligns with previous declarations against acts of vandalism, particularly referencing a similar incident where pages of the Holy Ramayan were torn at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir in Labasa. Both incidents have raised significant alarm about the increasing disrespect shown toward sacred sites in Fiji.
Community leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad, have expressed hope that such incidents, while distressing, could serve as catalysts for promoting dialogue among different faiths. Leaders are advocating for interfaith discussions to enhance mutual respect, which is vital for maintaining the harmonious social fabric of Fiji.
Rabuka also addressed concerns regarding feelings of exclusion during the recent Tui Nayau installation ceremony, emphasizing the importance of vibrant expressions of Fijian culture while noting that participation in traditional ceremonies is significant for communal bonding. His remarks further foster the notion that unity can be achieved through celebrating Fiji’s rich tapestry of customs and beliefs.
The overall message from the Prime Minister and various community figures is one of hope and a shared vision for a future where Fiji’s diverse religious and cultural backgrounds are respected and celebrated, fostering peace and understanding among all citizens.
