Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has described recent international media coverage regarding the alleged alcohol poisoning incident at the Warrick Fiji Resort as “highly exaggerated.” During a press conference, he emphasized the necessity of countering misinformation in order to protect Fiji’s reputation as a premier travel destination.

Last weekend, seven guests at a resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological distress, leading to their initial hospitalization at Sigatoka Hospital before being referred to Aspen Lautoka Hospital. It was reported that these individuals had consumed Pina Colada cocktails at the resort’s Suva Wing Bar; however, no other guests at different bars within the resort who also enjoyed the same drink reported any health issues.

In response to the situation, the Prime Minister and his government are seeking further clarification to rectify any misunderstandings. Rabuka reassured the public, stating, “We want everyone to know that it’s safe to come to Fiji,” and questioned whether the negative press about Fiji might stem from competitive sources in the tourism sector.

He characterized the incident as an isolated case that does not threaten the overall tourism industry in the region. Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka reported this week that a toxicology analysis has shown no traces of illicit substances or methanol in the beverages linked to the incident.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate reporting and the potential impact of false narratives on a nation’s tourism sector. It is encouraging to see the government taking proactive steps to ensure clarity and maintain confidence among tourists, showcasing Fiji’s commitment to safety and hospitality.

In summary, the Prime Minister’s response aims to reassure travelers about the safety of visiting Fiji while addressing the misinformation that could harm the country’s tourism.
