Fiji’s PM Calls for Constitutional Overhaul: A Step Towards Healing?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed the necessity of reevaluating the 2013 Constitution. He made these remarks while speaking at the National Federation Party Annual Convention in Sigatoka.

Rabuka asserted that the current Constitution imposes regressive limitations on human rights. He acknowledged that, as a coalition government, they could benefit from the clauses that grant them considerable advantages and power. However, he emphasized that accepting this would be unjust, unrealistic, and undemocratic.

He highlighted the importance of truth and reconciliation as a means for national healing and closure, aiming to put an end to the prolonged period of political turmoil and the resulting culture of fear and mistrust in Fiji. Rabuka pointed out the need to confront the pain and trauma from past political conflicts, recognizing the generational burdens these issues carry.

Supporting this initiative, National Federation Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad noted the importance of openly discussing the traumatic events faced by the nation to foster understanding and build a better future.

Rabuka reiterated his personal commitment to establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as part of the effort to create a fair and just constitution.
