Fiji’s PM Calls for Constitutional Overhaul: A Path to Reconciliation?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized the necessity to reevaluate the 2013 Constitution. He made these remarks during the National Federation Party Annual Convention held in Sigatoka.

Rabuka expressed his belief that the 2013 Constitution contains outdated restrictions on human rights. He acknowledged that, as a coalition government, they could benefit from the clauses that grant them unequal advantages and total authority; however, he stressed that doing so would be unjust, unrealistic, and undemocratic.

He stated, “Achieving truth and reconciliation as a nation is essential for healing and moving forward. This is crucial for Fiji to permanently close the dark chapter of political turmoil and the pervasive culture of fear and distrust that has affected our country. For too long, we have held onto the pain and trauma from our political struggles without recognizing the lasting burdens we carry and the potential legacy they could create.”

NFP Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad also endorsed the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, stating that it is time to engage in open discussions about the nation’s traumatic past to understand its impact and define a path forward.

The Prime Minister affirmed his personal commitment to the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as part of the quest for a fair and just constitution.
