Fiji’s PM Calls for Constitution Overhaul: A Path to Healing?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed the need to reevaluate the 2013 Constitution. He made these remarks during the National Federation Party Annual Convention held in Sigatoka. Rabuka pointed out that the current Constitution imposes regressive limitations on human rights.

He noted that while the coalition government could choose to benefit from clauses that grant them excessive power and advantages, they recognize that doing so would be unjust, unrealistic, and undemocratic. Rabuka emphasized that achieving truth and reconciliation is essential for Fiji’s healing, urging the nation to move beyond the historical political conflicts and the resulting culture of fear and mistrust.

He acknowledged that the nation has long suppressed the pain from its political turmoil and must confront the intergenerational trauma that can affect future generations. Supporting the call for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, National Federation Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad stated that it is time to openly discuss the traumatic events the nation has experienced to learn from them and shape a better future.

The Prime Minister reiterated his personal commitment to the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as part of the quest for a just and equitable Constitution.
