Fiji has made remarkable strides in reducing plastic pollution, achieving a 97 percent decrease in plastic bag usage since the implementation of a plastic bag levy in 2017. However, this environmental success has come with significant financial implications, as revenue from the levy has seen an 85 percent decline, amounting to an estimated loss of $19 million.

According to the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), the levy revenue peaked at $7.3 million in 2019 but has since dropped dramatically, falling to $785,710 in 2020 and plummeting to just $202,495 by 2023. This financial decline correlates with increased levy rates and legislative changes designed to discourage the use of plastic bags, culminating in the repeal of the Environment and Climate Adaptation Levy (ECAL) Act in August 2022.

Udit Singh, CEO of FRCS, noted that the reduction signifies a major environmental achievement, with plastic bag consumption falling from 14 million pieces to just 400,000. Despite the financial setbacks, these measures have fostered more sustainable shopping practices and contributed to the reduction of plastic waste throughout Fiji.

As the nation continues to prioritize environmental sustainability, Singh highlighted the ongoing commitment to reducing reliance on single-use plastics and encouraging eco-friendly alternatives.

This narrative exemplifies how tough decisions for environmental betterment can yield both positive and negative outcomes. While the financial implications pose challenges, the vision of a cleaner environment and sustainable practices holds promise for Fiji’s future.

In summary, Fiji’s proactive measures to reduce plastic bag usage exemplify a significant commitment to environmental sustainability, although they have led to notable financial challenges. The long-term benefits of fostering eco-friendly practices may ultimately outweigh these short-term financial setbacks.
