The newly established Fiji Pine Trust Board is committed to prioritizing the welfare of landowners while promoting strategic investments and sustainable growth for future generations. Led by Chair Semi Degei, the board includes notable trustees such as Ratu Kitione Tuinaosara from Bua and Josua Nayasi from Ra.
In addressing the board’s mandate, Degei emphasized the importance of accountability to landowners, stating, “We are not answerable to the government or the company; we are answerable to the landowners that voted for us.” He also highlighted the increasing challenge of managing lease returns. As the number of clan beneficiaries grows, the individual shares of lease returns diminish, necessitating a review of investment strategies.
To tackle this challenge, the board plans to diversify investments beyond traditional land leases, aiming to secure higher and more sustainable returns for all beneficiaries. A primary objective will be to develop robust governance and strategic planning over the next three years to maximize benefits for the landowners and support the growth of their mataqali and tribes.
The efforts of the Fiji Pine Trust Board resonate with ongoing initiatives from the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), which has been working on new conservation policies to ensure the sustainable management of land and resources. The TLTB’s approach includes implementing frameworks to safeguard ecosystems while providing financial support to landowners through community development funds. These funds are aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and education—critical areas that share the objective of empowering landowners and improving their livelihoods.
These progressive steps signify a hopeful and positive trajectory for landowners in Fiji, as both boards work towards enhancing financial stability, sustainability, and community development for future generations. This commitment to empowering landowners could pave the way for a more collaborative and prosperous environment, contributing significantly to the overall well-being of the iTaukei community.
