Fiji’s Pilot Bethnilza Kumar Targets Big Lifts at the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships

Bethnilza Kumar, a pilot and powerlifter, is preparing to represent Fiji at the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, from November 17-21. As one of only two female athletes from Fiji participating in the event, Kumar describes the experience as a substantial honor and a moment of pride.

“Representing Fiji at the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships as one of only two female athletes is a HUGE honor for me. To be able to wear Fiji’s colors at an international stage fills me with great pride,” Kumar expressed.

Juggling the demanding professions of aviation and powerlifting, Kumar finds parallels in the two disciplines. She emphasizes that both require discipline and the ability to perform under pressure. “As a pilot, part of my training involves problem-solving and adapting to situations, and this mindset seamlessly translates into the gym,” she noted.

Her journey in powerlifting was largely inspired by her brother, who recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue this rigorous sport. Kumar’s daily life revolves around her flying schedule, family commitments, and training. She diligently adjusts her training around her work and family time, focusing on making each session count while maintaining her nutrition and recovery.

Kumar identifies mental preparation as her greatest challenge in powerlifting. “The mental aspect has been the toughest part for me, whether it involves attempting weights I haven’t handled before or facing the crowd during my lifts. I am learning to see missed lifts as feedback rather than failure,” she said.

Heading into the championships, her goals remain clear: to compete fiercely in the U84 women’s category and to achieve personal bests while fulfilling technical requirements. Kumar aims to stay calm and embrace any challenges, viewing them as valuable feedback for future opportunities.

Beyond her aspirations in powerlifting, Kumar hopes to inspire other women to find their strength. “To every woman who has ever thought about stepping into a gym or trying a sport: DO IT. Strength comes in many forms, and it is NOT gendered,” she encouraged. She reminds others that pushing through doubts can lead to self-discovery and empowerment.

Kumar’s story resonates with the growing recognition of women in sports, resembling the narratives of other female athletes such as Susana Qionibaravi, who also represented Fiji at the Oceania Regional Championship in Christchurch. Last year, Qionibaravi, at 36 years old, broke records in her new powerlifting journey, embodying the shift towards empowerment and inclusivity for women in traditionally male-dominated sports.

As athletes like Kumar and Qionibaravi forge pathways for future generations, their dedication and achievements serve as powerful reminders that determination, hard work, and resilience can lead to success, making a profound impact on female representation in sports throughout Fiji and beyond.
