In Fiji, the local pig farming industry achieved notable milestones last year, with a total of 11,833 pigs slaughtered, resulting in the production of 717 tonnes of meat. Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu announced that this marks the largest number of pigs processed in the history of the Fiji Meat Industry Board’s slaughterhouses, reflecting both growing demand and advancements in local farming practices.

During the inauguration of the Waibogi Piggery Farm in Sigatoka, Minister Rayalu highlighted the expansion of Fiji’s pork market, revealing that the overall pork production for the year reached 1,179 tonnes within both formal and informal sectors. This production generated approximately $11 million for the local economy, which included $200,000 in pork exports to neighboring countries.

Minister Rayalu emphasized the quality and potential of Fijian pork, pointing to the diverse network of 4,160 pig farms in the country, comprising mainly smallholder farms. The self-sufficiency rate in pork production stands at an impressive 92%, an achievement that farmers can take pride in as they work toward sustaining and growing the industry.

This surge in pig farming aligns with recent trends in Fiji’s broader agricultural landscape, where reducing imports and increasing exports have become critical focus areas for improving economic resilience. In fact, local efforts to enhance agricultural outputs, much like those in the pig sector, include initiatives aimed at supporting farmers through access to resources and training.

As Fiji continues to capitalize on its agricultural strengths, initiatives such as promoting local production and establishing sustainable practices are paving the way for a brighter future. The commitment to improving self-sufficiency in various sectors enhances food security and fosters optimism for continued growth in Fiji’s agricultural economy.

This positive trajectory reflects a broader commitment to strengthening local industries, ensuring that farmers not only thrive but also contribute to the overall economic health of the nation.
