In Suva, Fiji, a remarkable transformation in photography is taking place, driven by Hemal Khatri, who has evolved from a passionate hobbyist to the owner of Special Moments Photography & Cinematography Studio.
Khatri’s journey began in an unconventional way. Initially studying for a Diploma in IT Networking, he struggled to find work in a challenging job market. The turning point came with the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted him to pursue his passion for photography more seriously. “I had a camera before, a friend’s camera actually,” Khatri reminisced. “Photography started as a hobby, but when I saw its potential, I thought, why not turn it into a business?”
Starting his career as a freelancer, Khatri focused on corporate photography and modeling portfolios, initially operating from his father’s tailoring shop. This humble beginning marked the start of an extraordinary journey.
By 2022, Khatri moved into his own dedicated studio, which he meticulously designed, including a wall that creates an optical illusion of infinity. Khatri’s studio has become a space that not only accommodates large groups but also offers a variety of backgrounds and props, providing a comprehensive range of services.
Khatri is passionate about uncovering hidden talent. “I believe everyone has a hidden talent,” he stated. Unlike many studios that primarily use traditional models, Khatri actively seeks individuals who may not fit the conventional mold, thereby expanding the possibilities of fashion photography in Fiji.
His journey has not been without challenges, particularly regarding space limitations in his father’s shop, which restricted the variety of shoots he could offer. Transitioning to a larger studio required careful investment planning. Additionally, while he initially charged $90 per hour, Khatri has had to adjust his rates to reflect his expanded services while remaining accessible to clients.
Beyond photography, Khatri is exploring videography, graphic design, and podcasting, aiming to create a multifunctional space that caters to various media needs. “I want to create a space where people can not only get their photos taken but also have a podcast recorded,” he said.
Client satisfaction drives Khatri’s business philosophy. He tailors each session to meet his clients’ visions, preferring to work alone to maintain control over the process. Looking to the future, he is eager to continue growing and diversifying his skill set, encouraging aspiring photographers to focus on cultivating their unique styles instead of comparing themselves to others.
In Suva, Special Moments Photography & Cinematography Studio stands as a testament to what can be achieved through passion and hard work, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.
