Fiji’s Phone Revolution: More Devices Than People!

Fiji now possesses more mobile phones than its entire population. Recent statistics from telecommunications companies indicate that there were 1.31 million mobile phones in the country last year. Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, suggested that this figure could imply that many individuals own two to three phones each. He noted that the population has not yet surpassed the one million mark.

The minister highlighted that even individuals living below the poverty line have access to mobile phones, with youths emerging as the largest group of users and developers driving digital trends worldwide. He emphasized the critical role of young people in harnessing technology’s transformative potential to tackle global issues.

According to Saukuru, this situation highlights the significant opportunity for young people to use digital avenues for sustainable development, ultimately paving the way for a brighter future for the upcoming generations.
