The forthcoming National Budget for 2025-2026 in Fiji is being branded as a “people’s budget” by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka. He made this announcement during a media briefing on Castaway Island, emphasizing the significant changes in governance that follow the long tenure of the FijiFirst Government. Gavoka highlighted the government’s commitment to transitioning effectively into a new administrative era after 16 years of previous leadership.

During discussions held within the cabinet’s subcommittee, various initiatives have been proposed, focusing on numerous social programs and infrastructure development. “It is going to be a very good budget, one that addresses our current needs while also considering the lessons learned over the last two years in government,” Gavoka noted, indicating that the budget would be reflective of the people’s expectations.

This prospective budget aligns closely with recent promises from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who has described the current fiscal strategy as centered on the welfare of Fijians. Rabuka stated that every aspect of the budget aims to enhance the quality of life in Fiji, which is crucial for reducing poverty, improving services, and ultimately fostering prosperity.

Furthermore, there’s a robust focus on social welfare, echoing prior remarks by Rabuka regarding significant financial commitments to support the community, such as subsidies for electricity and free water projects aimed at easing the financial burden on families.

The previous government’s introduction of a similar “People’s Budget” for the fiscal year of 2024-2025 also laid down a foundation that this current budget seeks to build upon, with ongoing consultations engaging citizens actively in the decision-making process.

As the government positions itself to roll out the new budget, the commitment to enhancing service delivery and addressing pressing social needs remains paramount. This proactive stance indicates a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s economy, with the potential to uplift communities and ensure that citizens see tangible benefits from government initiatives.

The emphasis on inclusion in governance and fiscal responsibility provides a constructive outlook for Fiji as it navigates its future amidst various economic challenges. Through these efforts, the government aims to foster a sense of modernization and responsiveness that resonates with the needs and aspirations of all Fijians.
