Members loyal to former Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, who led the Fiji First party, have established a new political party called People First to participate in the upcoming general election. The party is spearheaded by Semi Koroilavesau, a former Navy officer and current member of parliament for Fiji First.

The formation of People First has garnered attention as it includes notable figures from the previous administration. Inia Seruiratu, the Opposition Leader and also a former military officer, along with fellow Fiji First MP Jone Usumate, have joined the new party. Meanwhile, former military officials Viliame Naupoto and Iowane Naivalurua have opted to align with the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, taking several former Fiji First MPs with them.

Ana Mataiciwa, the Registrar of Political Parties, confirmed the registration of People First, noting that despite four objections relating to its name, symbol, and constitution, these issues have been reviewed and resolved. Objectors now have a 14-day window to appeal this decision to the Electoral Commission.

In terms of leadership, Koroilavesau has assumed the role of president, Raktnesh Kumar has been appointed vice-president, Ema Dimila will serve as secretary, and Lina Racuvu has been named treasurer. With People First’s establishment, Fiji now has a total of eight registered political parties, reflecting the dynamic political landscape ahead of the elections.

The emergence of new parties like People First indicates a potential shift in Fiji’s political scene, as former members of a deposed government seek to establish their presence in the next electoral cycle, paving the way for an engaging and competitive election.
