Fijian troops stationed in the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) continue to remain safe amidst ongoing developments in Syria. Recently, significant changes have unfolded in the country following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which had controlled the nation for over 50 years. Rebel forces have managed to capture the capital, Damascus, in a swift operation lasting less than two weeks, leading to speculation that Assad may have fled to Russia seeking asylum.

Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, emphasized that he received a thorough briefing on the situation from the Commander of the Joint Task Force Command and representatives present in the Golan Heights. A notable positive development highlighted by the Minister was the successful return of a Fijian officer who had previously been stationed in Damascus. This evacuation underscores the efficiency of the peacekeeping contingency measures established for such situations.

All Fijian troops deployed with UNDOF and UNTSO, including those stationed at the headquarters in Camp Faour, have been confirmed safe and accounted for. The Minister indicated that while the operational area remains tense, there is no immediate threat to the Fijian peacekeepers. Continuous collaboration with the United Nations and other stakeholders is in place to monitor the evolving circumstances, ensuring that robust contingency plans are ready to protect personnel should the security dynamics change.

Moreover, recent operations by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) within the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights aim to address rebel group activities. Minister Tikoduadua assured that United Nations positions have not been directly targeted, and all UN personnel, including those at Observation Post 71, have remained unharmed. Efforts continue to recover equipment and supplies that were temporarily compromised during a rebel infiltration.

Tikoduadua highlighted the added security provided by the IDF in the buffer zone, improving the safety of both UNDOF and UNTSO personnel. Local communities adjacent to UN positions have positively expressed their support for the Fijian peacekeepers and are working together to uphold stability in the region.

The Minister’s commendation of the troops’ dedication under challenging conditions reflects Fiji’s enduring commitment to promoting international peace and security. This situation signifies the resilience and adaptability of peacekeeping forces in response to emerging crises, providing a glimmer of hope for stability in a volatile region.

In summary, Fijian peacekeepers maintain their safety as Syria undergoes drastic change, demonstrating both effective response strategies and strong local support. The international community’s backing is crucial in pursuing peace and security in the region.
