Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called for decisive actions to foster national unity beyond mere rhetoric. In his remarks, he emphasized that the People’s Coalition Government is making significant strides toward this essential goal.

Rabuka highlighted the formation of a four-member Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which is tasked with traveling across the nation to facilitate truth-telling and healing. “Some of our people need closure from historic pain and trauma,” he expressed, underscoring the importance of addressing past grievances.

Key initiatives already undertaken by the government include the reinstatement of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day as a public holiday and the designation of Girmit Day as a national holiday, both significant steps toward recognizing the diverse cultural heritage of Fiji. “The Coalition Government not only talks about national unity, but we also actually walk the talk by implementing policies and initiatives that make Fiji and all its multi-ethnic and multicultural communities more united,” Rabuka affirmed.

In his wider vision for the nation, Rabuka stressed the need for Fijians to embrace a shared identity, particularly through pride in sports and community service. He cited national heroes such as the Rugby 7s teams and peacekeeping troops as symbols of unity, representing all ethnicities within Fiji.

However, the Prime Minister cautioned that unity is threatened by divisive discussions on social media. He urged Fijians to reject this negativity and foster a sense of collective identity. “We must recognize and accept Fiji as one unit and reject the subdividing influences that kill ‘unity,’” he stated firmly.

This call for unity and inclusivity resonates strongly with previous statements made by Rabuka and other leaders, emphasizing a need to promote respect among all ethnic groups. By focusing on shared values and mutual cooperation, Fiji can aim for a future where all citizens feel acknowledged and valued.

With ongoing efforts aimed at reconciliation and community engagement, there is an optimistic outlook for Fiji. The government’s dedication to fostering unity and healing historical wounds cultivates hope for a cohesive society, where all Fijians can thrive together as one.
