Fiji’s Path to Unity: Is ‘Fijian’ the Key?

The National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) Taskforce in Fiji is urging the Prime Minister to obtain formal approval from the Great Council of Chiefs for the designation of “Fijian” as the nationality for all citizens of Fiji. During the launch of the report, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua described the move as a positive step and expressed his commitment to advancing the initiative.

The report indicates that some stakeholders believe that adopting the term Fijian as a national label can unify the people and foster social cohesion. It suggests that referring the matter to the Great Council of Chiefs, who are seen as the guardians of indigenous Fijian identity, represents a reconciliatory gesture.

This recommendation allows the Great Council of Chiefs to deliberate on the issue, potentially creating a significant legacy similar to the one established by their ancestors who signed the Deed of Cession on October 10, 1874, thereby reflecting their commitment to the welfare of the nation. The report emphasizes that such an act of reconciliation could greatly enhance social cohesion in the country.
