Fiji’s Path to Reconciliation: A New Chapter Begins

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has affirmed his commitment to participating in the reconciliation process within the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), led by RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai.

In a recent media briefing, Rabuka revealed that he, along with former RFMF Commander Brigadier-General Retired Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and former Chief of Staff Lt-Colonel Jim Sanday, would be called upon to provide an account regarding their roles.

Rabuka also noted that the Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission tasked with developing a legal framework distinct from the proceedings of the RFMF.

Earlier, Major-General Ro Jone indicated that the RFMF aims to complete its reconciliation efforts before engaging in the broader national reconciliation process. He emphasized the importance of rebuilding public trust and confidence in the RFMF.

“We need to ensure that the public understands that the RFMF has fully reconciled,” Ro Jone stated. He outlined that the initial phase would allow soldiers to share their experiences at the national level, highlighting the necessity of such an internal process prior to their involvement in any national reconciliation panel.

The overarching goal of the commission is to promote healing, reconciliation, forgiveness, and trust, thereby fostering social cohesion and unity across the nation. The Prime Minister reiterated that the purpose of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is to assist those who have experienced violations to achieve healing and closure through sincere reconciliation with those responsible.
