The Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Rabuka, recently reflected on his government’s performance as they approach the halfway mark of their term, which began in December 2022. He acknowledged significant challenges including high national debt and deteriorating infrastructure, while asserting that the Coalition Government has been working diligently to address these issues over the last 28 months.
Despite a promising start, the PM admitted that progress has not come easily, noting the need for systemic reforms to better serve the public and engage voters. He highlighted three key priorities for the government’s future initiatives: fostering a resource-based economy and entrepreneurship, reducing reliance on imports through local food and renewable energy, and enhancing taxation efficiency to lessen personal tax burdens.
In terms of social justice and national unity, Rabuka discussed the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, aimed at addressing historical grievances and promoting unity among Fiji’s diverse communities. This initiative complements ongoing reviews of electoral laws and the 2013 Constitution, seen as essential to achieving genuine governance reforms.
Regarding the rising cost of living, which he characterized as a global concern, Rabuka indicated that the government has implemented various measures, including subsidies for basic food items and educational support for students, to alleviate financial pressure on Fijians. He reiterated the importance of engaging with citizens through public consultations, inviting their input as part of the democratic process.
Rabuka expressed commitment to transparency and accountability in governance and emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative political environment that includes the youth in decision-making processes. He urged citizens to make their voices heard in forums designed for public contributions, underlining that democratic engagement is vital for national progress.
The Prime Minister concluded by expressing hope for continued improvements in governance and societal cohesion, acknowledging the hard work required by all stakeholders to navigate the road ahead.
