Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasizes the importance of acknowledging past wrongs to confidently progress as a nation. In light of the recent passage of the Truth and Reconciliation Bill in Parliament, Chaudhry believes that documenting historical events is crucial, and he expressed anticipation for the forthcoming report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Chaudhry mentioned that the commission is designed to operate free from political influence. It will consist of five members, including three local representatives, with its chair sourced from the international human rights community to foster trust and credibility.
As a vocal proponent of this process, the Fiji Labour Party stands firm in the belief that for the nation to advance, it is essential to confront the traumas of the past openly and provide justice to those affected. However, he voiced concerns regarding the appointment of commission members, expressing apprehension that the President, known for his ethno-nationalist views and past involvement in the 2000 coup, may influence the selection process. Chaudhry hopes the President will appoint individuals with integrity and respect in society, who do not have political agendas.
Chaudhry acknowledged that some members of Parliament oppose the reconciliation process, fearing it might reignite painful memories of past violence and trauma. Yet, he contends that many victims have long awaited justice and closure for their suffering, citing numerous rural families who lost homes, vehicles, crops, and livestock during the chaos that ensued after the 2000 coup without any compensation.
He remains hopeful that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will provide justice for these victims of past coups, symbolizing a step toward healing and unity for Fiji as it faces its tumultuous history.
In a hopeful view, the establishment of this Commission could open pathways for national healing and understanding, fostering a more cohesive society willing to learn from its past mistakes. Embracing transparency and justice is a significant stride toward building a better future for all citizens.
