Fiji’s Path to Healing: Truth and Reconciliation in Focus

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized the importance of the truth and reconciliation process in fostering unity in Fiji. He expressed his support for the ongoing public consultations focused on the framework of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC), asserting that this initiative is essential for the nation.

Rabuka noted that the results of these consultations will influence the structure of the FTRC. In light of concerns raised in media regarding the 2013 Constitution’s immunity provisions, he clarified that these issues do not impede the consultation process.

He explained that when discussions around immunity arise during consultations, their relevance to the constitutional immunity clause will be addressed in the forthcoming Constitutional Review process.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the participation of former politicians, community leaders, religious figures, NGO representatives, and individuals in the recent public consultations held in Labasa, Nausori, Lautoka, and Suva, highlighting the necessity for open dialogue regarding the country’s political history.

Rabuka expressed gratitude to those who attended these forums and appreciated the genuine discussions that took place. He also extended thanks to Hon Sashi Kiran and her supporting Assistant Ministers for their commitment to advancing this important work.
