Fiji’s Path to Healing: TRC Applauds Military’s Reconciliation Efforts

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has praised the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) for their internal reconciliation initiatives that began in March 2023. During a recent meeting with RFMF leaders, TRC Chairperson Dr. Marcus Brand highlighted the military’s proactive efforts in engaging with former service members, community leaders, political stakeholders, and survivors affected by Fiji’s past conflicts.

Dr. Brand commended the RFMF’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of the historical narratives that shape Fiji’s identity, emphasizing that military perspectives play a crucial role in constructing an accurate historical record. He expressed the TRC’s intention to encourage continued collaboration with the RFMF through access to documents and testimonies, which are vital for transparency and truth-telling in the reconciliation process.

Both organizations recognized that reconciliation is an ongoing endeavor, urging not just a finite conclusion but rather a sustained commitment to national healing, participation, and support. The RFMF reaffirmed its dedication to preventing past mistakes from recurring, ensuring that their role as guardians of national order is inclusive and impartial, serving all citizens regardless of background or political affiliation.

This recognition of the military’s internal reconciliation process reflects a broader commitment to healing and unity within Fiji, indicating that both institutions are dedicated to addressing the underlying issues from their turbulent past. The collaboration between the TRC and RFMF is seen as a significant step towards establishing a more cohesive society, promoting societal recovery and a hopeful path towards future harmony. There is a shared belief that with ongoing dialogue and cooperative efforts, the nation can navigate its complex history and strive for a united future.
